2024 Latin Dance Night
WEPA!
Medway Marches first Latin Dance Night was January 19, 2024, at Burke-Memorial Elementary School Cafeteria.
Recap from Angelica:
“Friday night MM hosted a Latin Dance night for all ages. Thank you for all those who attended, donated and participated. Our mission statement to make Medway a more inclusive space for Black, Indigenous, and People of color is a tall task to take on. Oftentimes, I doubt our abilities or audience but 100% this community reminds me the work is impactful. Thank you so much for that! I realized bias, prejudice and racism are rooted in feelings of fear and discomfort. With every cultural event our community hosts, we combat those negative feelings and hopefully replace them with excited, loving ones. I lean in to MM continuing to be community lead and urge any feedback, comments or suggestions you may have. Once presented with ideas, we are happy to reflect on how we can make any of your feedback a reality. Thank you again for your support.”
About Latin Dance
Latin American dance encompasses dance traditions of Mexico, Central America, and the portions of South America and the Caribbean colonized by the Spanish and the Portuguese. These traditions reflect the distinctive mixtures of indigenous (Amerindian), African, and European influences that have shifted throughout the region over time.
Salsa, Bachata and Merengue are specific to the Caribbean, stemming from indigenous enslavement and the great migration of the 70’s into New York city.
