Yvonne is a BIPOC nurse at a level one trauma center. One morning she came in for her shift and was getting report from a night nurse before starting her day. Another nurse had floated to the unit the previous night. Yvonne did not know this nurse. They had never met or spoken to each other. When the other nurse noticed Yvonne, a BIPOC nurse, sitting at the nurse’s station, her eyes lit up and she headed straight over to her, with a determined, purposeful walk. She never introduced herself. Instead, she walked up and said, “You wouldn’t believe it. I saw a black baby the other day and would you believe it was beautiful?! I’ve never seen one like it!” Yvonne simply answered “Oh. That’s nice.” The woman continued on, gushing over the sight of such a baby. Yvonne remained composed and professional and let the woman finish her one-sided discussion, where she repeatedly exclaimed over how amazing and unusual it was to see a beautiful black baby. Another nurse overheard this conversation and later asked Yvonne if there was an inside joke or if they were missing something. There was not an inside joke and they did not miss anything. Just take a pause and think, have you ever been approached by a stranger to be told how they were amazed to see a thing like a beautiful white baby?
