James is a lovely 48 year old black man. He recently took his elderly mother shopping at BJ’s. While approaching the store in the parking lot, he saw a young white man pushing a collection of shopping carts. A white woman called to the man and asked for a carriage. The employee stopped pushing them, undid the clip holding them together, and handed a cart to the woman. James called out to the employee, “We will take one of those, too.” The employee looked at James, reconnected the carts, never giving James a cart, and continued pushing them away. James called out, “You just gave one to her.” And he was ignored. James started to call out to the man again, but his mother asked him to stop, saying that it wasn’t worth it and they would get a shopping cart in the store.
Lily is a 19 year old white girl. She was driving with three friends, one of them male, two of them female, all of them black. Lily didn’t realize that her car registration had expired until she was pulled over by the police. Lily was driving and it was her vehicle. The three black friends were simply passengers. Lily provided her license and registration and answered all the officer’s questions. He ran her information and when he came back, he made them all get out of the car. Being unregistered, the officer called for the car to be towed. While they were waiting for the tow, the officer thoroughly searched the three passengers – only the three passengers – for no legitimate reason – or any reason, except their skin color. And Lily, who was driving her unregistered car, and is white, went unsearched.
